George Kanahele and the Waikiki Historic Trail

Information about historian George Kanahele's contributions to the Waikiki Historic Trail in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Waikiki Historic Trail was originally conceived by Hawaiiana expert and historian George Kanahele. Kanahele was born in 1930 and was educated at Kamehameha Schools,Brigham Young University, and Cornell University. In 1994 he wrote a paper called "Restoring Hawaiianness to Waikiki" that proposed 140 ideas for improving Waikiki in ways that both the locals and tourists could appreciate. One of the proposals in that paper was creating the Waikiki Historic Trail. George Kanahele wrote most of the text printed on the surfboard-shaped markers on the trail. In 1997 he founded the Native Hawaiian Tourism and Hospitality Association. George Kanahele died on September 15, 2000, at the age of 69, at a seminar in Guam. He did not live long enough to see all of the markers installed on the Waikiki Historic Trail.
