Pearl Harbor Battleships Attacked in 1941
Oahu, Hawaii
Photos and information about the eight United
States battleships damaged during the 1941 Japanese attack
on Pearl Harbor.
Two of the three ships that were sunk at Pearl Harbor
were raised, repaired, and returned to service. I think "sunk"
is actually not quite accurate because I don't think Pearl Harbor
was deep enough to completely cover the ships.
Six of eight battleships damaged during the 1941 attack
were returned to service and two of them were not.
The USS Oklahoma capsized and was damaged beyond repair
and the USS Arizona still sits at the bottom of Pearl
Harbor.
USS Arizona
The USS Arizona battleship was sunk during the attack on
Pearl Harbor and it was a total loss. It still sits
at the bottom of Pearl Harbor. A beautiful white
memorial was built over the USS Arizona and that
memorial is still the most visited attraction in
Hawaii today.
USS California
The USS California battleship sustained significant
damage when it was hit by torpedos. The damage was
serious enough to sink the ship if it had been in deeper
water. After the attack it was raised and repaired
and it was back in action by May of 1944.
USS Maryland
The USS Maryland Battleship was only slightly damaged
and it was back in service again by February of 1942.
USS Nevada
The USS Nevada sustained heavy damage during
the attack but later it was repaired and
it was back in service by December of 1942.
USS Oklahoma
The USS Oklahoma capsized when it was attacked
by the Japanese. It was totally destroyed
and never went back into service.
USS Pennsylvania
The USS Pennsylvania Battleship was in drydock
at the time of the attack. It was slightly
damaged, and those damages were caused by a
U.S. destroyer ship that was also in drydock, exploding.
While those damages were being repaired, the ship
was modernized, and it was put back in
service in August of 1942.
USS Tennessee
The USS Tennessee was damaged, but it was
repaired and back in service again by March of 1942.
USS West Virginia
The USS West Virginia was sunk by the Japanese
but it was later raised and repaired. It was
back in service by July of 1944.
