-Her first novel "Hula" was published when she was in her 30's
-"Hula" was made into a movie starring Clara Bow in 1927
-Her most popular book was the first of her two autobiographical books
and it was entitled "Born in Paradise"
-Her novel "Hawaiian Harvest" was controversial in
its time because local growers did not like her
story about how Maui the pineapple industry got started.
The novel is controversial today because some readers
view portions of it as being racist.
-Husband: Alfred Lathrop Ball
She was married on December 25, 1932 in Ventura, California
and I believe this was when and why she left Hawaii to
live in California.
She died on December 2, 1943 in Fresno, California and
according to the Honolulu Advertiser she was 51 at the
time of her death.
* A source that says she is buried at Forest Lawn
Cemetery in Glendale, Southern California gives
her birth date as April 1, 1899. A 2006 Honolulu
Advertiser article about Armine von Tempsky says
she was born in 1892.
The Complete Works of Armine von Tempski
All of the autobiographies, romance novels, adventure novels,
and children's books written by Armine von Tempski
between 1927 and 1946 are still available because they
were all reprinted by the Ox Bow Press in the 1980's and 1990's.
Her First Novel "Hula" Was Made Into a Movie
Clara Bow and Clive Brook starred in the 64 minute 1927
movie version of Armine von Tempski's firest novel "Hula" and Duke
Kahanamoku had a part also. Directe4d by Victor Fleming.

"a vivacious 'it girl' of the roaring 20's raised on a ranch
near Hana in Hawaii. She is the idealized flapper woman who
remains true to herself amid her artificial, irresponsible
friends and family. She swims nude, and in a grass skirt does
a dance that appears to be some strange combination of the
hula and the Charleston.". And by another viewer:
"Hawaiian girl Bow resorts to nude swimming, drunken dancing,
and dynamite to win stiff-upper-lipped, married engineer Clive Brook.
A field day for Bow watchers and the censors.". And
another: "You ain't seen it all till you watch Clara Bow do her
naughty wiggle".
PLOT: A pampered but free spirited girl named Hula Calhoun falls
for a young English engineer who is building a dam
on her father's Hawaiian plantation.
