Introduction to the Bird of Paradise Flower
Page introduction...
Also known as strelitzia. Tropical flower
with a long pointed waxy bloom. Flower bloom is orangish and
blooms upward from the flower. If the fan-like blossom is not
open when you purchase them, soak the flower head in water for
about 20 minutes. Next gently reach into the base of the head
and lift out the blossoms into a fan shape. Avoid
temperatures below 50 degrees F.
The variety most often found on Hawaii
is called the Crane Lily (strelitzia reginae).
The bird of paradise's tendency to produce a lot of
nectar can sometimes lead to mold growth on the flower.
This mold can be removed easily by washing the flower
with plain warm, soapy water and rinsing with clean water.
Cut Bird of paradise flowers should be stored at
temperatures above 45 degrees F,
If heliconias or birds of paradise are supplied to you
in a closed condition, open one or two flowers by hand
from their protective bracts or spathe.
