When King Kamehameha V died in 1872, the Hawaiian
Legislature selected Prince William Lunalilo to become
King. He was a descendant of a half brother of
King Kamehameha I.
He was engaged for a time, but never married.
He had many foreign advisors, but he was very
concerned about the Hawaiian people. He died of consumption
after being king for just more then a year. He left
his estate to needy Hawaiians. There were rumors that
he was poisoned because of his concern for Native
Hawaiians.
King Lunalilo ruled the kingdom of Hawaii
from January 8, 1873 until he died on February 3, 1874
at age 39.
