1894 Annexation of Necker Island

Photo Credit: Ben H. Norton, Chief Engineer of the Iwalani Ship The Provisional Government of Hawaii sent interior minister Captain James A. King to Necker Island in 1894 on the steamship "Iwalani". After a difficult but ultimately successful landing effort, the Captain King and his crew stepped onto the island. They held an annexation ceremony on May 27, 1894 that included raising the flag of Hawaii.
