King Kamehameha Day Events in Hawaii
King Kamehameha Day was proclaimed in 1871 by
King Kamehameha V, to honor his great grandfather,
King Kamehameha I. The first King Kamehameha Day
was on June 11, 1872, and it was one of the first holidays
to be proclaimed when Hawaii became a state in 1959.
June 11, 2010 will be the 94th annual King Kamehameha
Day in Hawaii

Kamehameha Statue Lei Draping Ceremony
(Aliiolani Hale)
The 2010 King Kamehameha Commission (KKC) Lei Draping Ceremony
will take place at the King Kamehameha Statue in the historic capitol
district of Downtown Honolulu on Friday, June 11, 2010. The
statue is located across the street from the Iolani Palace, in
front of the Aliiolani Hale. The Royal Hawaiian Band will perform
at 11:00 a.m. and the statue draping ceremony will begin at 11:30
a.m. The statue will be decorated with 25 foot long floral tributes.

Oahu King Kamehameha Day Parade
(Fort DeRussy Park to the Iolani Palace)
The floral parade held in Honolulu every June, to honor the memory of
King Kamehameha, is the longest parade in Hawaii. The 94th Annual
Honolulu King Kamehameha Day Parade will take place on Saturday,
June 12, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The parade
will have a new route in 2010: It will begin in Waikiki's Fort
DeRussey Park, and proceed down Kalakaua Avenue to Ala Moana Boulevard,
to Punchbowl Street, to King Street, and end at the Iolani Palace,
located at the corner of South King Street and Richards Street in
the historic Capitol District of Downtown Honolulu

Oahu King Kamehameha Day Hoolaulea (Festival)
(Iolani Palace)
Immediately following the King Kamehameha Parade there
will be a King Kamehameha Day Festival on the grounds
of the Iolani Palace with live entertainment, food booths,
cultural demonstrations, and educational exhibits.

King Kamehameha Hula Competition
(Blaisdell Center)
Annual hula contest in Honolulu with separate chant,
traditional hula, and modern hula competitions. The
37th Annual King Kamehameha Hula Competition took place on
Friday and Saturday, June 25-26, 2010 at the Neal
Blaisdell Center Arena in Honolulu.
Big Island King Kamehameha Day Events
North Kohala is the birthplace of King Kamehameha I and every year,
on King Kamehameha Day, there is an important celebration in the
Northeast Hawaii towns of Kapaau and Hawi. There is also a
King Kamehameha festival and celebration in the East Hawaii town
of Hilo.

Kamehameha Statue Lei Draping Ceremony

The North Kohala King Kamehameha Celebration begins
with an opening ceremony in North Kohala that includes historic
presentations, hula and music performances, and a flower lei draping
ceremony at the King Kamehameha Statue in Kapaau. The ceremony
takes place every year on the birthday of King Kamehameha, June 11,
and it usually starts about 8:00 a.m. The Hawaii Island statue of
King Kamehameha is located on the lawn of the Kapaau Civic Center
in Hapaau.

Annual parade honoring King Kamehameha with a route that begins
in Hawi and proceeds down Akoni Pule Highway, to the King
Kamehameha Statue, and ending in Kamehameha Park.
The parade takes place every year on the birthday of King Kamehameha,
June 11, and it usually begins about 9:00 a.m.

(King Kamehameha Park in Kapaau)
The annual King Kamehameha Festival in North Kohala
features live entertainment by some of Hawaii's top
musicians and singers, exhibits, demonstrations, and
local style food. The festival takes place every year
at the Kohala Cultural Center in Hawi on the birthday of
King Kamehameha, June 11, and it typically runs from about
10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Information about the 2010 event TBA.
North Kohala is the birthplace of King Kamehameha
I and there is an important celebration there

a lei draping ceremony, a parade, an all day festival,
and a slack key guitar workshop featuring Cyril Pahinui
and John Keawe. The North Kohala King Kamehameha Day
celebration is organized by the Kohala Hawaiian Civic Club.

took place on June 11, 2009 and the event featured
an 8:00 a.m. Kamehameha statue lei draping ceremony in Kapaau,
a 9:00 a.m. parade from downtown Hawi to the King Kamehameha
statue in Kapaau, and a 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Hoolaulea at
Kamehameha Park. There was also a week-long slack key guitar
workshop featuring Cyril Pahinui and John Keawe that will
take place for the 2nd time in 2010.

Hilo Kamehameha Festival
(East Hawaii Island)
The Annual Hilo Kamehameha Festival takes place every
year, on June 11, in the East Hawaii town of Hilo. Performances
and activities include traditional Hawaiian Games,
and an all day hoolaulea (festival) featuring traditional
and contemporary Hawaiian music, hula performances,
a Hawaiian chant competition, cultural presentations,
Hawaiian food, and arts and craft booths. The
Hilo Kamehameha Festival is presented by
Mamala Hoa of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I.

Lahaina Kamehameha Pau Parade
(West Maui)
This colorful floral parade through the center of Lahaina
features Pau riders on horses decorated with flowers
representing each of Hawaii's largest islands. The parade
also features marching bands and floats, all honoring
Hawaii's King Kamehameha I. The 2010 Lahaina King Kamehameha
Day Parade will take place on Saturday, June 12, 2010
beginning at 9:45 a.m. The parade will proceed down
Front Street from Kenui Street to Shaw Street.

Lahaina Kamehameha Day Hoolaulea
(West Maui)
An all-day family festival honoring Hawaiian King Kamehameha I
featuring pau dressing and riding demonstrations,
an awards ceremony, arts and crafts, local style food, and
live Hawaiian Entertainment. The 2010 Lahaina Kamehameha Day
Hoolaulea will take place on June 12, 2010,
at Keawaiki Park (aka Banyan Tree Park) immediately following
the Lahaina Kamehameha Day Parade.
Wailea King Kamehameha Day Celebration
(South Maui)
the King Kamehameha Day Celebration held every year at the Wailea Beach
Marriott Resort and Spa in South Maui features a traditional chant, ancient
hula performances, a lei presentation, and Hawaiian craft displays
by local artists. The date of the 2010 Wailea King Kamehameha Day
Celebration will be posted here when it has been announced.

Lihue King Kamehameha Day Parade
(Southeast Kauai)
Rice Street from the Vidinha Stadium to the Historic County Building.
