Samoan Immigration to Hawaii
Between 1970 and 2000 the Samoan population of Hawaii increased from about
6000 to more then 28,000 full or part Samoans.
According to records published by the Hawaii State
Library, some of the changes in Hawaii's Samoan
population over the years were:
-1925 - 33 Samoans were living in Laie
-1951 - 117 Samoan Naval personnel with 257 dependents were transferred to Pearl Harbor
1970 - nearly 6000 Samoans in Hawaii
-1980 - about 14,350 Samoans in Hawaii
-1990 - more then 15,000 Samoans in Hawaii
-2000 - more then 28,000 Samoans or part Samoans in Hawaii
Note that 2000 was the first year the U.S. census
allowed respondents to choose more then one ethnicity.
