Queen's Surf Beach in Waikiki
Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii

Queen's Surf Beach is a popular bodysurfing, swimming, snorkeling, and surfing beach located in Waikiki's Kuhio Beach Park near the Kapahulu Groin, the Honolulu Zoo, the Waikiki Aquarium, and Kapiolani Park.

Queen's Surf Beach is located the Diamond Head end of Waikiki. It was named after Queen Liliuokalani because at one time her beach house and its pier were located here.

Free Outdoor Movies on Queen's Beach
On weekend evenings, free outdoor films are shown on a huge movie screen on one side of Queen's Beach (you can see the movie screen frame in the above picture). That event includes musical entertainment and food booths beginning about 4:00 p.m. and the movie usually starts around 7:00 p.m. For more information about the weekly movies at Queen's Surf Beach, select "Waikiki Events" from the menu on the Waikiki Improvement Association Web site.

Other Activities at Queens Beach
There is a good bodysurfing beach on the Diamond Head side of the Kapahulu Groin and there is a snorkeling reef in front of the Waikiki Aquarium. Some parts of Queen's Surf Beach are known to be popular afternoon gathering spots for Honolulu's gay community.

Queen's Surf Restaurant and Nightclub
In the 1950's and 1960's there was a popular restaurant and nightclub in Kapiolani Park that was known as the Queen's Surf. It was shut down by Mayor Frank Fasi on December 31, 1969. His decision was appealed and then upheld by the Hawaii State Supreme Court, which terminated the nightclub's lease as of May 31, 1970. When the Queen's Surf was finally shut down, nearly 700 people tried to crowd into to the club to say goodbye. After the shutdown, the club's popular Tavana Polynesian Revue moved to the Hawaiian Hut Nightclub at the Ala Moana Hotel. The building that housed the Queen's Surf Nightclub was torn down in 1971.

Location of Queen's Beach
Queen's Surf Beach is located between the Waikiki Aquarium and the Honolulu Zoo on the Diamond head end of Waikiki. It can be identified by the pedestrian walkway jutting into the sea that is known as the Kapahulu Groin and the huge "Sunset on the Beach" outdoor movie screen frame on one end of the beach. Queen's Surf beach is inside Kuhio Beach park.
