About Niihau Island

Niihau is the smallest inhabited island in the Hawaiian island chain and it has no roads, no hotels, and no restaurants. It is located about 20 miles west of the island of Kauai. For the most part, access to Niihau is limited to the approximately 300 residents who live there, but a there are a few limited tours available from Kauai.

Tours of Niihau
Niihau is a private island, and visits by outsiders are normally not allowed, but there is one company offering helicopter tours from Kauai that include snorkeling, a picnic, and beach time and hunting safaris are also available.

1941 Japanese Landing on Niihau
A Japanese pilot crash landed on Niihau while he was trying to fly back to his aircraft carrier after the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Two books were written about that little-known incident.
