Introduction to Chinatown Honolulu
Information about tours of the
Chinatown Distrit of Honolulu on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.
Honolulu's Chinatown area is located between the Nuuanu Steam and Nuuanu Avenue on the west side of Honolulu's central business district. Chinatown Honolulu is an eclectic mix of cultures where visitors can find lei shops, dim sim cafes, and pho restaurants, almost next door to upscale wine bars and art galleries. Most of the first Chinese immigrants to Hawaii came to work as field hands in Hawaii's sugar and other plantations. As they they became more established in Hawaii, many of them opened up shops in what is now the Chinatown district of Honolulu. Today Honolulu's Chinatown is an eclectic mix of cultures where visitors can find lei shops, dim sim cafes, and pho restaurants, almost next door to upscale wine bars and art galleries. The Hawaii Theater, many Chinese restaurants and businesses, and the open air Oahu Market are located in Honolulu's Chinatown, and the area has recently also become a center for the arts in Honolulu. In May of 2006, Chinatown Honolulu was designated a "Preserve America Community Neighborhood" by the United States White House Advisory Council on Historical Preservation.
