TRAIL NAME: Diamond Head Summit Trail
The Diamond Head Summit Trail was constructed between 1908 and 1911 as part of Oahu Island's coastal defense system. The fire control state at the top of the trail directed artillery fire from batteries in Waikiki and Fort Ruger. The trail as a natural tuff (volcanic rock) surface and it has many switchbacks, a steep stairway, and it passes through a lighted 225 foot tunnel. At the summit there are bunkers on the crater rim, a 1917 lighthouse on the coast outside the crater, and spectacular views of the south coast of Oahu Island from Koko Head to Waianae.
