Ala Wai Yacht Harbor and Magic Island
NAME: Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor
The Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor is located on the south coast of the island of Oahu in Hawaii, between Waikiki and Ala Moana Beach Park at the point where the Ala Wai Canal pours into the sea. This picture of the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor was taken from the terrace of the Ilikai Hotel.
HISTORY:
The Ala Wai Yacht Harbor has 700 berths, 85 moorings, 1 boat ramp, and 20 dry storage spaces. The harbor is located in front of two large hotels, the Waikiki Prince Hotel and the Ilikai Hotel. The largest hotel in Hawaii, the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort, sits next to the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor on the Waikiki side.
Two yacht clubs are based at the
Ala Wai Small Boat harbor, the
Hawaii Yacht Club
and the Waikiki Yacht Club.
The Ala Wai Harbor is the end point of the world famous
TransPac sailing race from Los Angeles to Honolulu
which takes place every two years. It was also the
home of the Kenwood Cup Hawaii International Offshore Series
for more then twenty years until that event ended in 2000.
