NAME: Ala Moana Beach
Ala Moana Beach is a half mile long man-made beach inside Ala Moana Regional Park in Honolulu. It is a popular swimming spot for local families because it is protected from the ocean waves by a reef The water is usually calm at Ala Moana Beach, and it is generally safe for swimming, but children and inexperienced swimmers should stay close to shore. The bottom drops off quickly and the former boat channel off-shore is as deep as 25 feet in some places. There can also be strong currents and rapid tide changes near the reef so it is safest to swim near the shore. Swimming would be very dangerous, and is not allowed, in the busy boat channels on both end of the park (the Kewalo Basin and the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor). Image Copyright © Kathie Walling
