on Midway Island in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands.
On September 13, 2000, in recognition of the heroic courage and sacrificeof those who fought in the Battle of Midway during World War II, Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt designated Midway Atoll as the Battle of Midway National Memorial. The Battle of Midway, fought from June 4-6, 1942, was one of the most decisive battles of World War II, and proved to be the turning point of the War in the Pacific.
