PIFSC Marine Turtle Research Program (MTRP)
Systematic, nighttime, month-long surveys of nesting turtles on East Island were carried out every year beginning in 1973 as part of the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center's Marine Turtle Research Program. The MTRP also carried out brief daytime surveys of green turtles on nine of the Northwest Hawaiian Islands including East Island and Tern Island in the French Frigate Shoals, Laysan Island, Lisianski Island, Southeast Island in the Pearl and Hermes Atollk, Sand Island and Eastern Island at Midway Atoll, and Green Island and Sand Island in the Kure Atoll. STudies indicated that 85% of green turtle nesting activities in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands occurs in the French Frigate Shoals
