The main form of transportation on Niihau Island is walking or bicycling. Local residents do not have motor vehicles unless they are necessary for farming or ranching activities. There is no public transportation system on Niihau Most local residents travel to and from Niihau on a private ferry service operated by the Robinson family, owners of Niihau Island. Residents can also travel to and from Niihau using a private helicopter service based in the town of Kaumakani on the west side of Kauai Island.
