Tourism on Niihau Island
Information about tourism on the island of Niihau in Hawaii.
The island's owners, the Robinson family, began offering helicopter day trips to Niihau Island in 1986, partly as an effort to help pay for a helicopter purchased to evacuate the island's sick and injured residents when necessary. The helicopter tours required a minimum of four passengers in a copter that could accommodate up to 7 people and the cost was abotu $200 per passenger for a three hour adventure. Recently (as of 1991) under an agreement with the Hyatt Regency Kauai, picnic flights aboard the Robinson helicopter were being offered for $250 per guest. The half day tour offered opportunities to swim and snorkel on as Niihau beach. Departures are from Port Allen Airport on Kauai. Helicopter Pilot is (was) Tom Mishler. Passengers get a peak at Puuwai Village, flying along the coast, beaches, where Captain Cook's crew put ashore in 1778, and 1281 foot Mt. Paniau highest point. pop in thousands in 1700's reduced by immigration to Kauai beause of draught and disease.Niihau Forbidden Island Opens...
