Hawaiian Islands.
At one time there were three rather upscale hotels on Molokai, the Lodge at Molokai Ranch, the Beach Village at Molokai Ranch, and the Kaluakoi Resort Hotel. The latter was closed in January of 2001 and the two former were closed in April of 2008. A smaller hotel, the Pau Hana Inn, was converted into a religious retreat in 2002. So that leaves only one hotel on Molokai, the Hotel Molokai near the town of Kaunakakai. Today there is only one hotel on the entire island of Molokai and it only has 45 rooms. Hotel MolokaiA low-rise, Polynesian village style hotel on Kamiloloa Beach, about two miles from the town of Kaunakakai. The Hotel Molokai has a swimming pool and an on-site restaurant and bar. 1989 description: Each of its 55 cottage studio units has a lanai with a swing. Room rates: $55 to $95. Contact was Hotel Molokai, Box 546, Kaunakakai 96748, or call 800-367-8047.
Hotel Molokai
Closed Molokai HotelsThis luxury hotel on the west end of Molokai is located at an elevation of 1200 feet, in the town of Maunaloa. It has 22 rooms with large private bathrooms, refrigerators, cable television, and private lanai. Lunch and cocktails are served at the Paniolo Lounge and breakfast and dinner is served in the Maunaloa Room. Beach Village at Molokai Ranch (closed April 2008) This unusual lodge is also located on the west end of Molokai. It has 40 two bedroom canvas "tentalows", which sit on platform decks. Units have picnic tables and open air bathrooms with toilet sink, and shower. Meals at the Beach Village are served in an ocean front community pavilion, sometimes buffet style and soemtimes cooked to order. Kaluakoi Hotel and Golf Club (closed January 2001) The 152 room, oceanfront, Kaluakoi Hotel and Golf Club on the west coast of Molokai opened in 1977 and closed in January of 2001. After its closure it was purchased by the owners of the Molokai Ranch, who eventually (by 2005) refurbished and reopened the golf course. At one point the Molokai Ranch had plans to re-open the resort hotel but since Molokai shut down all of their operations in april of 2008, that is no longer likely to happen. Note that Web site Kaluakoi.com is no longer associated with the Kaluakoi Resort 1989 Description: 292 rooms and lots of activities. Rates: $79 to $185. Contact was: Kaluakoi Hotel and Golf Club, Box 1977, Maunaloa 96770, or call 800-367-6046. Pau Hana Inn/font> (closed in 2002) In the Spring of 1998 the 400-room, low-rise, beach bungalow style Pau Hana Inn in Kaunakakai was in danger of being shut down. Its owners, Molokai Beach Ltd. publicly announced their plan to close the hotel and its Banyan Tree Terrace Restaurant as of May 31, 1998. A community group called the Pau Hana Ohana signed an agreement of sale in June of 1998 to purchase the hotel. I'm not sure if that sale ever went through, but in 2002 the inn was sold to the New Hope Christian Fellowship in 2002 and turned into a private religious retreat called the New Hope Molokai Oceanside Retreat. The Pau Hana Inn was located on Pau Hana Road near the junction of Oki Place and Seaside Place in the town of Kaunakakai. HISTORY OF THE PAU HANA INN: The Seasidee Inn opened on the Pau Hana Inn site 1946. B&C Trucking of Honolulu bought that inn in 1970. They tore most of the original inn down and rebuilt it as the Pau Hana Inn. About a year after the new hotel opened, a new bar and restaurant was added. In 1986, Molokai Beach Ltd, which built the Hotel Molokai in 1966, bought the Pau Hana Inn and put both of the hotels under the same management. In 1994 the Hotel Molokai closed its restaurant and bar, which gave more business to the hotel and bar at the Pau Hana Inn.
