Saving Molokai

Several diverse groups are planning the future of the island of Molokai. On May 13, 2007 there was a public meeting in the Kaunakakai School cafeteria where more then 60 local citizens discussed the future of Molokai. They don't want Maui County to decide the future of their island. The event was the first in a series of public meetings organized by Maui County and the Hawaii 2050 Task Force..

A team of scholars and experts worked with the University of Hawaii to develop a sustainability plan for Molokai but neither names of the experts or copies of the plan have been widely published. The plan was expected to go to the legislature in january of 2008.

Jeff Hunt of the Maui County Planning Commission was in attendance and he says he understands that what is appropriate for Honolulu may not be be appropriate for Kaunakakau.

Some local citizens say the environment should come first and economy second.
