- Unique harbor is best place on Lanai for unobstructed sunset views - Also a great spot for whalewatching December through May - Great Spot for dolphin viewing year round - The habor has great views of Lanai's dramatic western sea cliffs - Situated on the southwest coast of Lanai Island - Access to the harbor is limited on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays - (limit is due to freight activity and for security reasons) - Located 3.5 miles west of the Lanai Airport at the end of Highway 440 - Main commercial seaport for Lanai Island - Original harbor breakwater built in 1920's by James Dole - He was the founder of the Hawaiian Pineapple Company - New breakwater was built by Ul.S. Army Corps of Enginners - That breakwater was dedicated on july 7, 2007 - has a one of a kind look. Buttressed by 819 white 35-ton Core-Loc armor units - Harbor looks like it is surriunded by giant jack-like concrete blocks Kaumalapau arbor on the west coast of Lanai was very busy when Lanai Island was a huge pineapple plantation. The harbor was built in 1926 by the Hawaiian Pineapple Company which later became Dole Pineapple. The harbor is now used mainly by barges delivering supplies to the island and most of Lanai's fishing boats are docked here. In June of 2005 the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee approved $13 million to repair the breakwater off of Kaumalapau Harbor and improve the safety of that harbor. Located on the west coast of Lanai Island at the end of the Kaumalapau Highway. It is the main cargo harbor for Lanai Island and the harbor where several sportfishing boats are based. When Lanai was still one big pineapple plantation it was a very busy harbor for shipping that fruit. Has a 400 foot berth length at a cargo pier with a designed depth of 27 feet.
- 250 foot breakwater
The harbor's 250 foot breakwater protects the barge wharf on the north end of the harbor. A lighted buoy off the southern tip of the breakwater amrks the location of the 600 foot harbor entrance. The harbor's turning basin measures 800 feet by 500 feet with 30 to 50 foot water depths. No beach, public restrooms, or showers. There has have been some discussions about Kaumalapau Harbor being used in the future as an America's Cup base for Larry Ellison's Oracle Racing.
