Central Region of Lanai Island
An introduction to the central region of the island of Lanai in Hawaii.
The central region of Lanai island is also known as "Upcountry Lanai" because of its higher elevations than other parts of Lanai. Lanai City is situated at an elevation of about 1,600 feet and the highest point on the island is more than 3,300 feet above seal level. Central Lanai is cooler than other parts of Lanai and it has a rustic feel. Central Lanai's sloping lower elevations feature wide open plains dotted with pine trees. The road to Central Lanai from South Lanai's Hulopoe Bay and Manele bay passes through the Palawai Basin, an area once covered with pineapple fields. The Munro Trail in the eastern region of Central Lanai leads to Mount Lanihale, the highest peak on Lanai. Lanai City is the geographic and cultural center of Lanai Island. Its galleries, cafes, and shops are centrered around Dole Park. The town's boutique size Hotel Lanai was founded in 1923. The luxury Lodge at Keole is located just north of Lanai City. Activities at the lodge include fine dining, horseback riding, tennis, archer, and clay shooting.
