used as a penal colony for adult men.
After the arrival of missionaries from New England, the Kingdom of Hawaii under the rule of King Kamehameha III replaced the death penalty with exile. Kahoolawe became a penal colony for adult men in the early 1830's. The law making the Kahoolawe Island a penal colony was repealed in 1853, in part because food and water was so scarce on the island.
