Punaluu Black Sand Beach
Big Island of Hawaii
Punaluu Beach is a beautiful, palm-fringed, black sand
beach on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Punaluu means "diving spring", and this beach was
given that name because of the cold, fresh water springs
that bubble up from the bottom of the sea in this bay.

Facilities at Punaluu Beach include picnic tables,
toilets, and showers. There is also a campground with
a grassy area for tents, covered pavilions, bathrooms,
drinking water, and a lighted parking lot.
On one end of the bay, beyond the boat ramp,
you can see the remains of a cement dock that was once used
for transporting sugar cane. The dock was destroyed by
United States military during World War II to prevent
it from being used as a landing point by the Japanese.
The Kaneeleele Heiau sits above the remains of the dock.
There is a fresh water pond between the bay and a nearby
resort that is home to several different species of ducks.
Punaluu Beach Park is located in the Kau District,
off of Highway 11, south of Kona, between Pahala and Naalehu.
Warning About Swimming at Punaluu
This is not the safest beach for very young swimmers. Only strong
swimmers should swim at Punaluu Beach, and even they should not
go beyond the boat ramp because there are strong rip tides in the bay.
Important Note to Visitors
Do not remove any of the black sand from Punaluu Beach
and you must stay at least fifteen feet away from the
sea turtles you will often see on that beach.
