About Cattle Ranching in Hawaii

Articles and information about the cattle ranching industry in Hawaii.

Hawaii's cattle ranching industry was born in the 1790's when Captain George Vancouver gave a herd of cattle to Hawaii's King Kamehameha. The cattle ran wild for many years and in the early 1800's cattle ranches began to spring up. King Kamehameha III visited California when it was still a part of Mexico and he was impressed by the skill of the Mexican vaqueros. In 1932 he invited some of them to Hawaii to teach cattle ranching and handling techniques. The Hawaiian name for cowboy is paniolo (from "espanol").

Hawaii Cattlemen's Council
This association of Hawaii cattle ranchers is an umbrella organization for the five county-level cattlemen's associations in Hawaii. The organization's goal is to provide Hawaii's cattle ranchers with opportunities, resources, and the information they need to be sustainable and profitable. The organization is also an\ advocacy group for issues affecting Hawaii's cattle ranching industry.

Hawaii Beef Industry Council
The Hawaii Beef Industry Council is a qualified state beef council under the U.S. National Cattlemen's Beef Board. The organization promotes beef and beef products in the State of Hawaii and they also organize research and education efforts.

Paniolo Hall of Fame
The Paniolo Hall of Fame was founded by the Oahu Cattlemen's Association in 1999 to recognize and honor the Hawaiian cowboys and cowgirls of Hawaii's past and present and to keep Hawaii's paniolo heritage alive.
