About Cattle Ranching in Hawaii
Articles and information about the cattle ranching industry in Hawaii.
Hawaii's cattle ranching industry was born in the 1790's when Captain George Vancouver gave a herd of cattle to Hawaii's King Kamehameha. The cattle ran wild for many years and in the early 1800's cattle ranches began to spring up. King Kamehameha III visited California when it was still a part of Mexico and he was impressed by the skill of the Mexican vaqueros. In 1932 he invited some of them to Hawaii to teach cattle ranching and handling techniques. The Hawaiian name for cowboy is paniolo (from "espanol").
