About Agriculture in Hawaii
Articles and information about agriculture in
Hawaii. Includes both fruit and vegetable farming.
The agriculture industry in Hawaii has been shifting in recent years from growing pineapple and sugar cane to producing flowers, coffee, macadamia nuts, papaya, mangos, noni, salad greens, herbs, and other crops. The pineapple and sugar industries have been declining in recent years because those crops can often be grown less expensively in Asia, Central America, or South America then in Hawaii. Many of Hawaii's farmers are moving to more specialized crops that appeal to upscale niche markets. For example, the juice of the bitter flavored noni fruit can sell for up to $30 a bottle, and it is being promoted as a remedy for many ailments.
